How to Spend a Day in Sausalito

Sausalito, California is a small town nestled between the northern bay area and the southeast nook of the Marin Headlands and it is absolutely breathtaking. The quirky homes are stacked into the steep hills of the coastline, lending gorgeous postcard views. It’s a break from the noise of San Francisco making the perfect day trip across the Golden Gate Bridge. So, what should you do when you get there?

How to Spend a Day in Sausalito

Ride the Ferry

You can begin the day with a commute across the Golden Gate Bridge or you can be more adventurous and take the ferry across the bay. I recommend the latter for a more scenic route as you pass Alcatraz, Tiburon and get a panoramic view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco cityscape in under 30 minutes. The weekends bring in an influx of tourists, so visit a day during the week to beat any crowds, if you can. Grab a cup of coffee at Blue Bottle and depart from the Ferry Building to journey across to the adorable seaside town.

Explore the Marin Headlands

The Marin Headlands is the beautiful peninsula north of the bay full of hiking trails, beaches and campsites. While there is a lot of ground to cover, start with Slacker’s Hill. It’s for beginners, but the short ½ mile hike up has stunning views of the city of San Francisco. Navigating the mountains can seem intimidating, but there’s signage sufficient enough to keep you guided and on-trail. Venture even further north to the Muir Woods to witness the gorgeous redwoods, if you’re feeling spontaneous.

Shop & Eat Lunch on the Boardwalk

Unwind after your day of exploring the Marin by heading down to the boardwalk for some retail therapy and a bite to eat. You can spend hours perusing the local shops and gazing at the impressive houseboats. I suggest Barrel House Tavern for lunch, they have an unbeatable view of the bay from the outdoor patio. The restaurant sits right on the boardwalk and has an infinity pool-like view facing the water. This waterfront gem has a locally sourced menu that will be more than enough to satisfy your post-hike appetite.

End the Day at Lappert’s

After you’ve wasted a few hours indulging in the northern hills of Sausalito and passed the afternoon exploring the downtown area, end your excursion at Lappert’s Ice Cream. There’s nothing like bringing an end to your day with such a delicious delicacy. Grab a cone while you people watch or head back to the pier.
